Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a short-term marital counseling model for counselors who have difficulty in marital counseling, apply the developed model to the counseling process and verify its effectiveness. In order to achieve this, literature research for short-term counseling, marital counseling and related prior research was reviewed and in-depth interview and analysis were conducted to reflect the experiences and needs of the marriage counselors. This study developed a five-session short-term couple counseling model based on the three principles of Hill¡¯s (2004) integrated counseling model. Results of this portion of the study were applied to 3 couples seeking counseling. Results are as follows. First, via counseling utilizing the short-term couple counseling model, couples experienced stable interactions with the counselor. Recognition of the spouse¡¯s growth, background, and characteristics heightened emotional understanding resulting in a change of negative perceptions by their partner. Second, through counseling, couples were comfortable with increased emotional expression and actively sought to consult with each other before making decisions. The results of this study suggest that the short-term couple counseling model is an effective model for marital change and recovery. Limitations and implications are discussed.
